Why can’t ordinary software tools restore files from RAID?

Conventional hard disks keep user’s data by writing it to their surface in a consecutive way, and this is how an entire file is stored on a single hard disk. However, when data is written to a RAID system, a file is divided into several parts. Then these parts are written consecutively to all hard disks within such array. The size of such parts may range from 2 KB to 2 MB, so each file is stored on several hard disks at the same time.

Such approach helps to speed up read and write operations, and it is evident that saving two parts of a file having the size of 1 GB to two hard disks simultaneously is much faster than saving the same 1 GB of data to one hard disk. However, this peculiarity makes file recovery more complicated.

Various RAID levels store information in different ways. Additionally, manufacturers like QNAP also introduce some modifications to this process, and that is why data can be written to hard disk in a wide variety of ways.

Can natural disasters such as floods or fires result in data loss for NAS QNAP UX-1200U-RP devices?

Yes, natural disasters such as floods or fires can result in data loss for NAS QNAP UX-1200U-RP devices. These devices are physical hardware that store data on hard drives. If the devices are damaged or destroyed by a flood or fire, the data stored on them can be lost. It is important to have proper backup and disaster recovery strategies in place to mitigate the risk of data loss in such situations.

How to take hard disks out of the NAS and connect them to a PC?

Although NAS UX-1200U-RP can be accessed over the network, you still need to take the hard disks out of the storage device and connect them to a Windows computer. Only in this case will the software be able to scan them properly. Here is what you should do:

  1. Turn off the storage and disconnect it from the power supply.

WARNING! Before you start taking hard disks out of your NAS device, read the manual carefully. Incorrect actions may damage your network-attached storage and/or the hard disks within the RAID system.

  2. Take the hard disks out of the NAS one by one, carefully removing them from their slots. Remember that the disks are extremely vulnerable: hitting or dropping them may result in serious physical damage.

  3. Make sure to mark each hard disk in accordance with how they were installed inside the NAS.

  4. Remove the hard disks and connect them to the computer. In this video, we have explored what ports are used to connect hard disks, and what to do if there are not enough ports or connectors.

Safe recovery from disk images

This utility lets you save an entire copy of the disk to file and then work with this image instead of the actual disk. Such feature helps to protect data on the disk from:

  • Overwriting during the recovery process;
  • Loss resulting from bad sectors;
  • User mistakes.

To create an image, do the following:

  1. Make sure that you have enough free space to save the image. The image file size usually equals the disk size.

  2. Select the disk in the main window, and choose from the menu ToolsSave Disk. You can select multiple disks to be saved.

  3. When the image creation wizard starts, you can choose to save the entire disk or select only a part of it. Specify the parameters and click Next.

Where are user’s files stored?

The QNAP UX-1200U-RP network-attached storage keeps QTS (QuTS hero) operating system files on a separate RAID 1 (mirrored) array. Usually, all NAS systems create several volumes on every hard disk, and the first of them takes up to 2 Gb of space. This is where operating system files are stored. Other volumes are united into a RAID array where user’s data is written.

Yes, it is possible to recover data from a NAS device that has been affected by a controller card failure or interface problem. However, the process of data recovery may vary depending on the severity of the issue.

In such cases, it is recommended to contact a professional data recovery service that specializes in NAS devices. These experts have the necessary tools and expertise to diagnose and recover data from failed NAS devices.

They may attempt to repair or replace the faulty controller card or interface to restore access to the data. If the hardware repair is not possible, they may use specialized software and techniques to recover the data directly from the drives.

It is important to note that attempting DIY data recovery methods or using inexperienced recovery services may further damage the device and result in permanent data loss. Therefore, it is advisable to seek professional help for the best chances of successful data recovery.

  • What are the recommended configurations and settings for optimizing the NAS QNAP UX-1200U-RP for storing video game data?

To optimize the NAS QNAP UX-1200U-RP for storing video game data, you can consider the following recommended configurations and settings:

    1. RAID Configuration: Set up the NAS with a suitable RAID level to ensure data redundancy and performance. RAID 5 or RAID 10 are commonly recommended for a balance between storage capacity and performance.
    2. Storage Pool: Create a storage pool using all available hard drives to maximize storage capacity and performance.
    3. File System: Format the storage pool with the appropriate file system. QNAP NAS supports multiple file systems, but it is recommended to use the QTS default file system (ext4) for compatibility and performance reasons.
    4. SSD Cache: If your NAS supports SSD caching, consider adding SSDs to improve read and write speeds for frequently accessed data. Enable SSD caching for the storage volumes containing the video game data.
    5. Network Configuration: Connect the NAS to your network using a high-speed Gigabit Ethernet connection. Ensure that the network infrastructure supports high bandwidth to minimize data transfer bottlenecks.
    6. Link Aggregation: If your network switch and NAS support link aggregation (also known as port trunking), you can increase network bandwidth and improve data transfer speeds by combining multiple network ports.
    7. Network Jumbo Frames: If your network infrastructure supports it, enable jumbo frames on the NAS to increase the maximum transmission unit (MTU) size. This can improve network performance by reducing the overhead associated with smaller packet sizes.
    8. Quality of Service (QoS): Configure QoS settings on your NAS to prioritize network traffic for video game data. This helps ensure smooth gameplay and reduces latency.
    9. Scheduled Backup: Set up scheduled backups of the video game data to another storage device or cloud storage to prevent data loss in case of hardware failure or other issues.
    10. Antivirus and Malware Protection: Install and regularly update antivirus and malware protection software on the NAS to prevent any potential threats from affecting your video game data.

Remember to consult the QNAP UX-1200U-RP user manual and the QTS operating system documentation for detailed instructions on configuring specific settings based on your requirements and preferences.
