How to recover data from NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+

Recover data from damaged RAID arrays inaccessible from a computer.

Why can’t ordinary software tools restore files from RAID?

Conventional hard disks keep user’s data by writing it to their surface in a consecutive way, and this is how an entire file is stored on a single hard disk. However, when data is written to a RAID system, a file is divided into several parts. Then these parts are written consecutively to all hard disks within such array. The size of such parts may range from 2 KB to 2 MB, so each file is stored on several hard disks at the same time.

Such approach helps to speed up read and write operations, and it is evident that saving two parts of a file having the size of 1 GB to two hard disks simultaneously is much faster than saving the same 1 GB of data to one hard disk. However, this peculiarity makes file recovery more complicated.

Various RAID levels store information in different ways. Additionally, manufacturers like QNAP also introduce some modifications to this process, and that is why data can be written to hard disk in a wide variety of ways.

Can accidental deletion or user error cause data loss in NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ devices?

Yes, accidental deletion or user error can cause data loss in NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ devices. If a user accidentally deletes important files or folders, or if they mistakenly format the NAS device, it can result in the loss of data. It is always recommended to have backups in place and to be cautious while performing any actions on the NAS device to avoid such data loss situations.

How to take hard disks out of the NAS and connect them to a PC?

Although NAS VS-2108 Pro+ can be accessed over the network, you still need to take the hard disks out of the storage device and connect them to a Windows computer. Only in this case will the software be able to scan them properly. Here is what you should do:

  1. Turn off the storage and disconnect it from the power supply.

    WARNING! Before you start taking hard disks out of your NAS device, read the manual carefully. Incorrect actions may damage your network-attached storage and/or the hard disks within the RAID system.

  2. Take the hard disks out of the NAS one by one, carefully removing them from their slots. Remember that the disks are extremely vulnerable: hitting or dropping them may result in serious physical damage.

  3. Make sure to mark each hard disk in accordance with how they were installed inside the NAS.

  4. Remove the hard disks and connect them to the computer. In this video, we have explored what ports are used to connect hard disks, and what to do if there are not enough ports or connectors.

Restoring data with Hetman RAID Recovery

Hetman Raid Recovery

This program recovers data from damaged RAID arrays and is fully compatible with QNAP VS-2108 Pro+. The hard disks that make up the RAID contain technical information about the algorithm used to save files. When launched, Hetman RAID Recovery reads this information and puts the damaged array together. Then you can open the disk and save your files. Also, you can recover the files accidentally deleted from the network drive.

VS-2108 Pro+ has 2 HDD slots, and it supports the following array types:

  • RAID 1;

NAS supports:

  • ZFS;
  • EXT4;
  • EXT3;
  • exFAT;
  • FAT32 (External Disk Only);

  • HFS+ (External Disk Read Only);

Safe recovery from disk images

This utility lets you save an entire copy of the disk to file and then work with this image instead of the actual disk. Such feature helps to protect data on the disk from:

  • Overwriting during the recovery process;
  • Loss resulting from bad sectors;
  • User mistakes.

To create an image, do the following:

  1. Make sure that you have enough free space to save the image. The image file size usually equals the disk size.

  2. Select the disk in the main window, and choose from the menu ToolsSave Disk. You can select multiple disks to be saved.

  3. When the image creation wizard starts, you can choose to save the entire disk or select only a part of it. Specify the parameters and click Next.

Where are user’s files stored?

The QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ network-attached storage keeps QTS (QuTS hero) operating system files on a separate RAID 1 (mirrored) array. Usually, all NAS systems create several volumes on every hard disk, and the first of them takes up to 2 Gb of space. This is where operating system files are stored. Other volumes are united into a RAID array where user’s data is written.

    Can data recovery from a NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ device be performed if there are issues with the network router or switch?
    • Hetman Software
      Hetman Software 18.09.2023 10:00 #

      Yes, data recovery from a NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ device can be performed even if there are issues with the network router or switch. The NAS device itself stores the data on its internal hard drives, so as long as the drives are functioning properly, the data can be recovered.

      In such cases, you may need to directly connect the NAS device to a computer using an Ethernet cable, bypassing the router or switch. This allows you to access the NAS device directly and recover the data. However, keep in mind that if the network issues are related to the NAS device itself, such as a hardware failure or corruption, then data recovery may require professional assistance.

      It's always recommended to have proper backups of your important data to avoid any potential data loss situations.

    4. Local hosting: Hosting your website on a NAS allows you to keep your data and server locally, which can result in faster website loading times and reduced latency. This can be especially beneficial for websites that target a specific geographic location.
    5. Scalability: NAS devices like the QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ offer scalability options, allowing you to easily expand storage capacity and upgrade hardware as your website grows. This scalability is often limited or more complex in traditional hosting options.
    6. Additional features: NAS devices often come with additional features like built-in backup solutions, RAID configurations for data redundancy, multimedia streaming capabilities, and support for virtualization. These features can provide added value and convenience for website owners.

    It's important to note that using a NAS as a website server requires technical expertise and may not be suitable for all types of websites. It is recommended to assess your specific requirements and consult with professionals before making a decision.

  • How does the NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ handle website traffic and ensure optimal performance for visitors?

    The NAS QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ is primarily a network-attached storage device designed for data storage and management rather than handling website traffic. However, it can indirectly contribute to ensuring optimal performance for visitors by providing a reliable and efficient storage solution for hosting website files and databases.

    By storing website files and databases on the QNAP NAS, it allows for centralized management and easy access to the data required for serving web pages. The NAS offers various features that can enhance website performance, such as:

    1. High-speed data transfer: The QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ supports high-speed network connectivity, typically Gigabit Ethernet or faster, allowing for fast data transfer between the NAS and web servers. This ensures that website files can be accessed quickly, reducing loading times for visitors.
    2. RAID support: The NAS supports RAID configurations, which provide data redundancy and improved read/write performance. By configuring RAID, website data can be distributed across multiple hard drives, allowing for simultaneous access to different parts of the website. This enhances performance and helps prevent data loss in case of drive failures.
    3. SSD caching: The QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ supports SSD caching, where solid-state drives are used to cache frequently accessed data. By caching website files and databases on SSDs, it accelerates read and write operations, resulting in faster website performance.
    4. Virtualization support: The NAS supports virtualization technologies like Virtualization Station or Container Station. This enables running web server applications within virtual machines or containers on the NAS itself. By hosting web servers on the NAS, it can reduce the latency and network overhead associated with accessing data from external servers, leading to improved performance.
    5. Scalability: The QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ can be expanded by adding additional storage units, allowing for increased storage capacity as website traffic and data grow. This scalability ensures that the NAS can handle growing website demands without compromising performance.

    While the QNAP VS-2108 Pro+ offers features that can indirectly contribute to website performance, it is important to note that for high-traffic websites or complex web applications, dedicated web servers or hosting solutions may be more suitable. The NAS primarily serves as a reliable storage solution for website data rather than directly handling website traffic.
